Malawi Police in Mchinji district have arrested three notorious criminals who have been behind series of aggravated robberies in the country.
Mchinji Police spokesperson Inspector Kaitano Lubrino said one of the thugs identified as Binali Mataka, 34 was arrested during the wee hours of Monday by police officers who were on patrols after he was spotted having dubious movements.
“Immediately after his arrest, the police received a report that a shop belonging to Metro in the district had been broken into by unknown thugs who went away with a cash chest” said Kaitano.
Kaitano expounded further that before getting entry into the shop, the criminals tied the watchman both legs and hands and then used gas apparatus to break burglar bars and went away with the safe.
According to an assessment by the Branch Manager for the shop Mrs. Atusaye Mwamulima, 41 of Mwanegha village, Chief Kyungu in Karonga established that the cash stolen was K3,024,000.00.
Police investigations connected Mataka with that robbery and recovered a motor vehicle Toyota Passo registration number MH 1617 and a gas tube which are believed to have been used during the robbery.
“His arrest implicated two more suspects Gerald Yasin Chilumpha and Pemba Katinji who were arrested in Zomba and Blantyre respectively”, added Kaitano.
The watchman for the shop has also been detained for a probe after being mentioned of conniving with the criminals.
Among other valuables, the police have recovered cash amounting to K906,000, two motor vehicles, 2 plasma tv screens,1 laptop, 3 Digital cameras and 2 gas cylinders.
“The arrest of these criminals will help police to solve some of the outstanding aggravated cases of violent crimes of robberies of Kasungu PTC, Ntcheu PTC, Dedza FMB, Salima OIBM, Nkhotakota PTC, Mtaja Sobo and MSB where the trio confesses to have a hand”, concluded Kaitano.
The trio, Mataka Binali, 35 hails from Kapire village under Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi district, Gerald Yasin Chilumpha, 29 from Chikolongo village in the area of Traditional Authority Mulumbe in Zomba district, while Pemba Katinji, 24 from Litunji village under Traditional Authority Katuli in Mangochi district.
They will all appear before court when investigations are over.
