According to Harry Namwaza, Kasungu deputy Publist said Robert Gondwe was arrested on November 14, 2017 at Chinsanjire village after police officers and game rangers successfully followed up a tip.

“On the material day he was found in possession of 10 pieces of raw Ivory weighing 30.815 kg valued at MK45,606,200.00”, said Namwaza.

Gondwe was answering charges of (1) Being Found in Possession of Specimen of Listed Species contrary to section 86(1) as read with section 110(B)(b)of the National Parks and Wildlife Act and (2). Dealing in Government Trophy contrary to section 91(1)as read with section 110 (B)(b) National Parks and Wildlife Act.

In court, Gondwe pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against him and he also pleaded for lenient sentences as it was the first time for him to commit the offences.

However, Director of Prosecution in the Malawi Police Service, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Happy K. Mkandawire who was representing the state objected to Gondwe’s request citing that, the nature of the offences he was answering required stiff sentences.

Mkandawire reminded the court that government spends a lot of money to maintain protected species like elephants and if such offences are to be stopped perpetrators must be given stiff sentences.

Before passing sentences, Kasungu First Grade Magistrate, Damiano Banda supported Mkandawire’s call for stiff sentences on Gondwe citing that, offences Gondwe was answering were serious ones which deserved stiff sentences.

The First Grade Magistrate, Damiano Banda then slapped Gondwe with 14 and 12 years jail terms respectively. The sentences will run concurrently.

A 37 year reign ended on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 for the 93 year old president.

Zimbambweans knew no any other president than Mugabe and it is not yet known who will succeed him since in his resignation letter does not indicate a person to take over the reigns.

It was a week of demonstrations in Zimbabwe demanding Mugabe to resign amid economical crisis in the country.

The speaker of Parliament, Jacob Mudenda confirmed the resignation of Mugabe in a letter which was submitted to the parliament.

“I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation with immediate effect”, read part of the letter.

The ZANU-PF gurus expelled the president from party in a bid to force him leave the presidential seat.

It is said that in the letter Mugabe said he resigned to allow smooth transfer of power.

ZANU-PF gave Robert Mugabe an ultimatum to resign before Monday midday but in his address the president dod not utter a word about his resignation.

After the address ZANU-PF leaders decided to impeach Mugabe but he resigned before the impeachment took place.

Two Men Sentenced To 19 Years Each For Removing Private Parts Of 18 Year Old Boy.

The Nkhunga magistrate court has convicted and sentenced a 42 year old man identified as Rangerson Mashikudu to 19 years imprisonment with hard labour for removing private body parts of an 18 year old boy.

The court through Inspector Wills Asibu heard that on August 30, 2016 the convict and his friend Norman Maxwel Mandix took the victim into the cane fields of Illovo Dwangwa estate where they jointly chopped-off all his private parts

“As this was not enough, the two went away with the victim’s bicycle and later police arrested the two”, said Nkhunga Police Publist Ignatius Esau.

He said they were charged with three counts of Unlawful removal of tissue from body of a living person contrary to section 18 of Anatomy act, Grevious harm contrary to section 238 and Robbery with violence contrary to section 301 of penal code.

Norman Maxwel Mandix pleaded guilty to all counts and was handed a 14 year jail term while Rangerson Mashikudu pleaded not guilty and this prompted the state to parade seven witnesses.

After proving the three charges beyond reasonable doubt, on November 10, 2017 court convicted Mashikudu on all the three counts.

In mitigation, the convict pleaded with the court to show leniency when sentencing him saying he looks after his children.

But when passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Kingsley Buleya concurred with submissions presented by the state that the convict deserves stiffer punishment bearing in mind the fact that the victim has suffered permanent deformity and as such, it will be difficult for him as a man to get married.

Magistrate Buleya ordered the convict to serve a 14 year jail term for first count, two years for the second count and three years for the third count, sentences to run consecutively.
