President Mutharika To Address Oxford University On Global Access To Education While Chanco Is Still Closed.

The President of the Republic of Malawi, HE Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will this afternoon leave for Europe on a business trip.

The President will depart Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) at 3:00pm heading to Brussels, Belgium where he will hold high profile bilateral meetings.

In Belgium the President will speak at the 2017 European Development Days (EDD) meeting which is held each year to bring together the development community to share ideas and experiences in ways that inspire new partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

After the European Development Day in Brussels, President Mutharika will travel to the United Kingdom (UK), where he will address the Oxford University focusing on among others the Global Access to Education, Youth and Women Empowerment.

The President’s trip to United Kingdom has sparked mixed reactions amongst Malawian citizens who are questioning the President’s motive of addressing the Oxford University while the Chancellor College (Chanco) in Malawi has been closed and he has failed to address the issue up to date.

Malawians have been pressurising the President to open Chanco so that they should continue with their education but the issue has not been resolved by his givernment.

Chancellor College (Chanco) a constituent college of University of Malawi (UNIMA), was closed late last year after academic staff downed tools demanding salaries equal to those of staff from other colleges under UNIMA

In another development, as the president leaves the country on a tour of Europe, on Monday teachers have organised a country wide strike following government’s failure to address their welfare issues including the outstanding leave grants.

According to the Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) President, Willie Malimba said that teachers have not yet received their yearly leave grants and it is their duty to fight for their rights. He said if they fail to do it now then they will lose everything.

“The strike is on and there is no turning back, we want our voices to be heard by the government and act. We were surprised when we heard that Mavuto Bamusi who is the presidential adviser on civil society organisations announced that the strike has been called off. We will fight for the welbeing of our teachers”, said Malimba.

Malawi is currently facing a critical situation not only in education sector but also in health sector where there is a scarcity of drugs in most of the country’s hospitals.
