Hakainde Hichilema Back To Court On June 8, 2017 To Answer Treason Charges.

The President of the United Party for National Development (UPND) Hakainde Hichilema and 5 other people will on Thursday appear again in court over the treason case levelled against him.

The presiding Magistrate David Simusamba adjourned the case on May 4, 2017 and set Thursday, June 8, 2017. The hearing will start at 009hrs.

The Magistrate Court is expected to rule on whether Mr Hichilema and 5 others should be referred to the High Court as per committal certificate issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to refer the treason case to the High Court.

The main opposition leader in Zambia Hakainde Hichilema has been in prison since April after he was charged with treason for allegedly obstructing President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade on a main road. The opposition leader disobeyed police orders to give way to the presidential motorcade in an attempt to put the life of the republican president in danger.

Some human rights activits have critised Lungu’s government the way they have been handling Hichilema’s case. Some have called Lungu as a dictator for not considering the views and pleas from different human rights organisation.
