A sombre mood engulfed Kauta village under Traditional Authority (TA) Fukamapiri in Nkhata Bay district after a 26 year old man identified John Banda died after he drowned in Lake Malawi.
Confirming the development to News Watch Reviews, Nkhata Bay Police relations officer, Ignatius Esau said the incident occured on May 29, 2017 while he was fishing.
“John Banda was a renowned fisherman in his area and on May 29, 2017 he went to Mazembe area which is along the shores of lake Malawi for fishing but he didn’t return home until on May 31 2017 when his body was found floating dead on the waters of the Lake”, said Esau.
An autopsy concluded that Banda died due to suffocation secondary to drowning.
Meanwhile Police in the district have warned residents living along the shores of Lake Malawi that the Lake is currently experiencing persistent mwera winds and as a precautionary meassures people are warned not to go fishing whenever there are such kind of winds on the lake.
